Biography
Alexander Yakushev belongs to that glorious generation of hockey players who brought the Soviet team to the cosmic level and made the whole world admire the invincible “red car”.
As part of the USSR national team and his native “Spartak”, the lightning striker was repeatedly recognized as the best player in his role and won every conceivable title, became a two-time Olympic champion and a seven-time world champion.
fact
Childhood and youth
Alexander Sergeevich Yakushev was born in 1947 in Balashikha. Father and mother worked in the metallurgical industry in Moscow. The family had three sons.
The boy showed an early interest in sports, however, he honed his skills on the football fields. By the age of 12, Alexander was already part of the children's football “Spartak”.
There was a hockey section at the Hammer and Sickle plant, where the Yakushevs worked, and Sasha, being carried away by the new sport, easily qualified for it. Parents did not approve of hockey and hoped that their son would get a normal working profession. They did not like to go to matches with their son.
“Spartak” also had a youth hockey team, and Alexander even received an invitation there, but continued to train modestly at the factory. However, already at the first serious competitions, the coach of the Spartak youth team, Alexander Igumnov, saw talent and a mad grip in the boy and did everything to get a gifted athlete into his club.
So in 1961, Yakushev will become his own in the red and white team and will forge glorious victories with it for 20 years.
In the youth team of “Spartak” the 14-year-old striker was the youngest, but he was not inferior to his comrades in skill and perseverance. High growth also played into the hands, which neutralized the noticeable difference with partners. For two years in a row, the guys became champions of the USSR in their age category.
1964 can be considered a landmark in the athlete's biography: Sasha moves from the youth team to the main team. This happened almost by accident, since the position of the striker at that time was ironically secured to the brilliant Boris Mayorov.
But the hockey player fell ill before a serious meeting, and 17-year-old Yakushev was called in to replace him, playing consistently and brightly in the juniors. Alexander used his chance: in the match against Krylia Sovetov, he scored his first “adult” goal and since then has become a full-fledged player in the main team.
fact
Hockey
The tall, high-speed and technical forward received the nickname “Yak-15” at the suggestion of a Canadian journalist, because he really looked like a fighter. It was during the legendary super series with Canada, where the Soviet team in 1972 under the leadership of Anatoly Tarasov worked wonders.
There was someone to look at, because Valery Kharlamov, Vladislav Tretyak and Boris Mikhailov shone in the lineup, but it was Yakushev who became the most productive player, scoring 7 goals and gaining 11 points. Experts called him the best hockey player in 4 out of 8 matches, and North American journalists even ranked him as “immortal”.
The path to these high-profile titles began in his native “Spartak”, which is associated with the first significant victory in Yakushev's career - first place in the USSR Championship in 1967. The young striker's contribution to success was palpable, and in the same year he was first called up to the national team.
For the first world championship in Austria in his career, Alexander went in reserve, but was able to go out on the ice and score the puck against the GDR. This means that he did not receive his first gold medal at the World Championships as an extra.
For the Olympic Games in Sapporo (1972) Yakushev is already an unshakable member of the USSR national team and leaves Japan with the title of Olympic champion.
After that, there will be a second super series with Canada in 1974, where the hockey player will again become the record holder in attack, having recorded 5 goals and earned 8 points.
In 1975, from the World Cup in Germany, Alexander will bring not only the sixth “gold”, but will also become the best striker of the tournament. The hockey player really can do anything: the puck is obedient to him, the throw is sharp and accurate, he is not afraid of power struggle, although he prefers high-speed attacks.
Until the late 1970s, Yakushev will earn victories from the national team, including the second highest standard medal at the 1976 Olympics.
At the same time, the golden era of “Spartak” is connected with the striker's game: with the participation of the star, the club becomes the champion of the USSR three times. Here, the striker manages to score 50 goals per season, and in 1976 Yakushev was appointed team captain.
Alexander Sergeevich finished his playing career in Austria, where in 1983 he combined it with coaching. Then he returned to his native “Spartak” already as the main mentor, having graduated from the Higher School of Coaches.
From 1998 to 2000, Yakushev headed the coaching staff of the Russian national team and experienced, perhaps, the main professional drama. In 2000, at the home world championship in St. Petersburg, the team under his leadership took 11th place, and this is the worst result in the history of Russian hockey.
fact
Personal life
Alexander Yakushev is a monogamous person. First love Tatiana became his wife. Young people met at a sports camp, where the girl represented the ski section from the institute, met for 4 years, and then got married.
In 1994, the family experienced a tragedy - under unclear circumstances, their only daughter, Ekaterina, died at the age of 21. The couple no longer have children.
fact
Alexander Yakushev now
Alexander Yakushev lives in Moscow, is the president of the amateur "Night Hockey League" and the club "Legends of Hockey", which brought together famous Soviet veterans. The team's stars meet with fans and organize master classes. Friendly games are scheduled for 2019.
Alexander Sergeevich, due to his age, is experiencing some health problems, it is known that in 2014 he suffered a heart attack. However, his stateliness and physical form can only be envied (the weight of a man is 89 kg with a height of 190 cm). The champion still enjoys training on the ice.
In 2016, an autobiographical book was published, “All to be honest. About hockey and not only ”, where the athlete shares memories of his playing past, talks about his brilliant partners in his youth, shares photos and details of his personal life.
On November 12, 2018, a solemn ceremony took place in Toronto, where Alexander Yakushev was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, immortalizing his name among the greatest hockey players of all time. He became that rare player who received this honor without playing a single game in the NHL.
