Alexander Lesun is a Russian and Belarusian athlete performing in the Modern Pentathlon discipline. He has won numerous European and World championships, and in 2016 he won gold medals at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.  

Alexander was born and raised in the Belarusian city of Borisov. From early childhood, the boy became interested in sports and spent almost all the time, starting from the age of six, in the pool. He had good results, but at the age of 15, already at the Olympic Reserve School, Lesun preferred another sport - pentathlon, in which he could realize himself not only as a swimmer, but also as a runner, fencer, horseman and shooter.

Already by the age of 17, the young man twice won bronze medals of the European Championship in this difficult discipline that requires incredible endurance - after all, an athlete usually goes through all of the above types of competitions in one day. In 2007, Alexander was included in the national team of Belarus, and Lesun played for this country not only as a pentathlete, but also tried himself a couple of times in “pure” fencing.

In 2008, the young man moves to Russia, accepts citizenship and agrees to speak for a new homeland. The fact is that, according to Alexander, in Belarus the head coach of the Olympic team did not specifically give him the opportunity to develop in order to include his own pupil in the team instead. Medical documents were fabricated, according to which Lesun allegedly should not go in for sports at all. In Russia, the pentathlete underwent examinations in several different independent clinics, which did not find any abnormalities in him.

In the spring of 2010, Alexander Lesun managed to break into the Russian national team and in May won the preliminary stage of the World Cup in Hungary, and in September won the silver medal of the full-format World Championship. The next year, the newly minted Russian repeated this achievement. It is interesting that only teammates - Sergey Karjakin and Andrey Moiseev - let Lesun ahead.

In 2012, the athlete's results improved significantly: he not only won almost all competitions, but also topped the world rating of modern pentathlon. Alexander rode as a favorite to the London Olympics, performed well in his favorite fencing, but at the last stage he allowed himself to be overtaken by competitors and eventually took only 4th place.

Therefore, four years later, Lesun went to Rio de Janeiro with an irrepressible thirst for revenge. This desire manifested itself instantly - Alexander, according to the results of the personal classification, took first place, taking the gold medal of the Olympic Games. Moreover, the pentathlete set an Olympic record in fencing, gaining 268 points in this form, which no one had previously achieved.

Now the main goal of the young man is the 2020 Olympics, which will be held in Tokyo. He wants to try himself not only in pentathlon, but also in a new Olympic discipline - a mixed relay, where a man and a woman compete in pairs. Alexander wants to participate with another naturalized Russian woman, a former athlete from Lithuania Donata Rimshaite.

The wife of Alexander Lesun is called Catherine. Until the age of 18, she, like her future husband, was engaged in modern pentathlon, but did not go into professional sports. In 2012, the young people had a daughter. It is interesting that the Olympic champion categorically does not want the girl to follow in his footsteps. He is not against playing sports "for himself", to maintain tone and health, but not as a main activity.

I must say that Alexander Lesun has to live in two countries. From spring to autumn, he lives in a base near Moscow, and his wife and child at this time live near Minsk, in a country house, next to which a pine forest grows. The athlete goes there as soon as he has free days, which is very rare.
