After school, Alexander decided to devote his life to sports and in 1964 he entered the Institute of Physical Culture. Since 1966, the young man was trained by Elena Tchaikovskaya. She also picked up a couple for the guy - Lyudmila Pakhomova, who was already known in the Soviet Union.

Only they themselves and Elena believed in the success of the tandem, because they did not know Alexander then. He was just a first-rate, Lyudmila was a star. But Alexander trained long and hard, striking his colleagues. During crosses and hour runs on the sand, he was three times ahead of others.

They developed their own unique skiing style, calling the idea the Russian style. An unusual way of performing ice dances combined various elements. It contained echoes of the folk, Russian and Soviet styles. The idea was a success.

In 1969, three years after the start of pair dances, Alexander and Lyudmila achieved third place at the world championship - a bronze medal. The British have bypassed them, but named their successors during interviews. They won their first gold in the championship the following year. In the first year of their joint career, the couple competed with British, German and American athletes. They coped with this test and were ahead in their creativity. In 1975, the skater, when he was returning from the European Championships, had a backache. It was not an ordinary cold - the skater went to the hospital. He underwent a complex lung operation. The reason is rupture of a blood vessel in the lung. The patient was operated on for 4 hours. There were complications in the form of allergies and blood clots. Alexander needed an expensive and rare medicine.

Sports hardening and the steadfast character of the skater helped to cope with the test - after three days he got to his feet, and five days later he walked on his own. Doctors forbade him to exercise and skate on ice. But Alexander, three weeks after the operation, was already skating.

The following year, he again entered the competition. Alexander and Lyudmila did not participate in the World Championship, but in an ice dancing show in Innsbruck. The star couple received first place then. Alexander said the following about this program:

After the victory in Innsbruck, they left the ice. Alexander became a figure skating coach and worked as a figure skating coach until 1992. Then he took the post of head of the department of international relations of the ROC.
