In the summer of 2017, Alexander participated in the World Roller Skating Championship, which was held in Sollefteå, Sweden. There, the Russian again received gold in the 20 km distance.

After 3 days, Alexander was expected to compete for the next round of the World Cup, held in Oberstdorf, Germany, where the Russian showed not the best result, becoming the fortieth in the 15 km freestyle mass start.

The athlete celebrated Christmas holidays in 2018 in Val di Fiemme, Italy. In the mass start in the 15 km classic style he came fifth, and in the 9 km freestyle pursuit he took only 31st place.

At the 51st Ski World Championships held in Lahti, Finland, Alexander finished 26th in the sprint race.

According to the results of the general classification of all stages of the Tour de Ski race, on January 5, Alexander was awarded a gold medal.

At the World Cup in Czech Nove Mesto in mid-January, Bolshunov again showed good results. He won the 15-kilometer freestyle race, reaching the finish line in just over 30 minutes.
