After that, for some time he left the group to perform in the "Gems", but then returned to the "Merry Fellows", with whom he toured the entire Union, took part in an international competition in Czechoslovakia.

In addition to participating in various musical groups, Alexander managed to work with David Tukhmanov. The song "Invitation to Travel", performed by a young singer, became the first step to popularity. However, the field of a pop artist at that moment was not for him. Love for rock and reggae and a desire for self-expression were the reason for the creation of their own band. The group "Pearl", created in 1977, did not last long, but with it the artist managed to go on tour on the Black Sea coast.

In the early 80s, Barykin, together with V. Kuzmin, a former partner in Gems, created the Carnival group. Their first mini-disc, released in 1981, sold 5 million copies. Her most famous hit is "Sudden Dead End".

The album "Superman", which was released afterwards, won the hearts of lovers of Russian rock music. Soon there was a split between the musicians, and Kuzmin was forced to leave the group and create his own under the name "Dynamic". And Barykin released a magnetic album "Carousel". The main hits of "Carnival" of that period were the songs "The Island", a little later - "Star Ship", "Chile".

Due to the large-scale campaign against rock bands launched by the Soviet authorities in the mid-80s, many musicians had to go underground. Carnival was also blacklisted. To stay in sight, Barykin drew attention to pop music and again asked Tukhmanov for help. The album "Steps" was recorded, which gained great popularity in the Union. In addition to Tukhmanov's songs, the album also contained Barykin's own songs.

After the release of "Steps" the band's program was approved, and "Carnival" officially began to be listed in the Grozny Philharmonic, from which he got the opportunity to tour. In the same 1985, the playful song "Programming Program" sounded on the air of "Blue Fire". The performance of this song, as well as the rejection of the previous style, cost Barykin the loss of many old fans, but gaining wide popularity. Although the performer himself did not believe that he parted with rock and roll. He "only strived for realization and followed fashion."

He was invited to the festival "Song of the Year 1987", after which Barykin finally established himself as a pop idol. Later, the singer admitted that he literally hated his hit, since it was not easy to regain the lost fame of a rock musician.

In the late 80s, Barykin tried to revive Carnival. The first album after returning to the old traditions "Hey, look!" (1989) turned out to be hard rock. The most notable compositions of the album were the songs "Hey, look!", "Whirlpool", "What a pity". However, it was not possible to release it on vinyl: in those days, the artist had serious problems with the thyroid gland, which began back in 1986 after visiting the zone affected by Chernobyl with a concert.

The result of a number of surgeries was the almost complete loss of the singer's wonderful voice, and the musician's career began to decline. Attempts to return were made in 1994, when the disastrous album Russian Beach was released. In 1995, his son Georgy joined the renewed Carnival. The band signed to MOROZ Records and re-released their old CDs. In 1996, one of the most successful, according to the artist, the album "Islands" was released, after which the thyroid disease again made itself felt, and the singer was forced to leave the stage for a while.

By the beginning of the 21st century A. Barykin's songs were performed by A. Pugacheva, T. Bulanova, F. Kirkorov, Valeria. In 2001, the musician, together with his son Georgy, created the Barykin Band group, which released the Volga album. Barykin's notable performances were a series of concerts dedicated to the 25th anniversary of his musical career (2000) and a festive concert dedicated to the half-century anniversary of the artist (2002), held in the Kremlin Palace. The latter was released as a separate disc called Star Carnival. A year later, the singer released the album “Pray, Child”, which consisted of songs on spiritual themes.

The musician has been married twice. They met their first wife Galina as children and lived together for 30 years. For the second time by marriage, Barykin tied himself in 2005. His chosen one was 20-year-old Nelly Vlasova. Barykin took her to himself as a backing vocalist, she became the author of several songs for the album “Nelly” dedicated to her (2006).

Children - son George (born 1974) and daughter Kira (born 1992). In 2006, the second wife gave birth to a daughter, Eugene. The artist also has an illegitimate son Timur (born in 1988), whose mother is the famous pop singer Raisa Sayed-Shah, who toured with the Carnival group in the 80s. After parting with Vlasova, the singer had a hypertensive crisis. Having recovered, Barykin dropped all precautions and continued his creative activity. 

On March 26, 2011, during a tour in Orenburg, the singer's heart stopped. Barykin died in the hospital from a massive heart attack. The funeral took place at the Troyekurovsky cemetery in the capital. The next year after his death, a monument was erected on the singer's grave. Alla Pugacheva herself helped raise funds for him.
