Alan Cumming grew up in the Scottish countryside, near Dundee, where his father was a forest ranger. From an early age, he likes to participate in all the little plays put on by his school before registering for acting lessons. At the age of 16, he started working for Tops , a magazine for teenagers. He entered the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama at the age of eighteen . Before even finishing his studies, he was already working for theater, television and cinema. In 1988, he debuted on the stage at the Royal Court Theater in London in The Conquest of the South Polewhich earned him a nomination for the Laurence Olivier prize for Best Male Hope. During his career he never ceased to oscillate between theater and cinema. In 2008, he played the role of Masha, alongside Dianne Wiest, in an adaptation of Anton Tchekhov's The Seagull by Viacheslav Dolgachev? where he plays an exuberant Dionysus in a free version of Euripides ' Bacchantes at the Edinburgh International Theater Festival.

In the cinema, he especially makes remarkable appearances and all very different: he takes on the role of a Russian and vile scientist in GoldenEye in 1995, then we see him as a reverend in Emma the go-between and persecuted in Get Carter alongside Sylvester Stallone (2001). The year is proving to be a fruitful one for the multi-faceted individual - he likes to dress up and put on makeup - who once again surprises with an exuberant and wacky villain in the two episodes of Spy Kids (2001). The same year, he co-directed with Jennifer Jason Leigh, his first film, The Anniversary Party, presented the following year in Cannes. The film recounts the increasingly unfortunate events that will accumulate during an evening that promises to be under the best auspices.
