A musician by training and a graduate of IDHEC, Alain Corneau began his film career by becoming in 1970 Costa-Gavras' first assistant on L'Aveu. This is the opportunity for him to work for the first time with Yves Montand, which he will conduct three times thereafter. After the autobiographical New World (1995), Alain Corneau returned to the detective film with Le Cousin (1998) and thus offered the comedians Alain Chabat and Patrick Timsit the opportunity to shine in roles against employment. His next film, The ambitious Prince of the Pacific, made in 2000 with the same Patrick Timsit and his accomplice Thierry Lhermitte, ended up in failure, both commercial and critical.

The filmmaker then abandoned big-budget comedy in favor of more intimate works such as Stupeur et tremblements (2003), adapted from the homonymous novel by Amélie Nothomb, or Les Mots Blues (2005), inspired by the work of the same name by Dominique Mainard. . The following year, Alain Corneau made a thirty-year-old dream come true by transposing his friend José Giovanni's book, The Second Breath, to the screen. This thriller is led by a luxurious cast composed among others of Daniel Auteuil, Monica Bellucci, Jacques Dutronc and Michel Blanc. Continuing this homecoming, in 2009 he also directed Crime d'Amour, a feminine thriller starred by Ludivine Sagnier and Kristin Scott Thomas.
