Nice movie for high school girls. I looked with pleasure.

Old Allen is completely old and stamps his crafts according to the same scenario, in which he slightly shuffles the paragraphs and changes the main characters the names. I was only twice in Manhattan. The first time in two, the second time I was already twenty. I remember there were some crazy discounts. Parents were shocked that a bag from Birkin or a Rolex watch could be bought directly from a sheet on the street for only two hundred dollars. Ashley from the movie

A Rainy Day In New York Review

Gatsby Wells (Timothy Chalame) - scion of a very wealthy New York family.

Gatsby's mother iron-handedly steers her son's upbringing, but at the Ivy League college, which his mother chose for him, Gatsby lasted only a few months, so he had to be transferred to Yardley Humanitarian College, located outside the city: there is no such pathos as in the Ivy League, but Yardley - the college is also quite snobbish.

In the student newspaper, Gatsby met another student, aspiring journalist Ashley Enright (El Fanning) - a commoner from Arizona, who after a while should inherit a large fortune of his father-banker.

Next Saturday, Ashley is due to meet in New York City, Manhattan, with the famous intellectual director Roland Pollard (Lev Schreiber) to interview him for a student newspaper. Gatsby wants to use this occasion to arrange Ashley's weekend in his favorite New York: he wants to rent a room in a swanky hotel, whose windows overlook Central Park, and makes a rich program, providing lunches and dinners in posh restaurants, trips to museums and walks in Central Park.

Gatsby, however, has one problem. On the same Saturday, his mother planned an Autumn reception, at which Gatsby is required to appear. But he hates these tricks along with the whole audience that comes there, so the guy told his mother that he had to finish the course, so he would stay on campus and not come to the city.

So if your mother finds out that Gatsby was in town, but did not come to her reception - it will be the wildest scandal. But Gatsby is great because he knows how to foresee everything: he will shoot not "Carlisle" which is located too close to the house of parents, and "Pierre" - he is on the opposite end of Central Park.

But in New York, things didn't go the way they were supposed to. The interview with the tired life and work of the director was very long, after which Ashley's cold and completely sucked new York movie bohemian.

And Gatsby, reeling in rainy New York, accidentally met Chen (Selena Gomez) - the younger sister of his ex-girlfriend. Chen has turned into an interesting young girl - somewhat, however, stinging and sarcastic, but Gatsby himself is the same, so who knows how it will all end, but we understand that Central Park will somehow be involved.

This film was released back in 2018, but it fell under the all-crushing rink of movement #MeToo, #TimesUp and #ВсеМужикиСво: Woody Allen's adopted daughter Dylan looked at all this mush bacchanalia and, in turn, unexpectedly remembered that 24 years ago was sexually abused by the adoptive father. Her memory came back so well after so many years, clearly not without the help of Allen's hating friend Mia Farrow, but who cares?

The main beauty of the movement of #MeToo is not only that thanks to it reveal real rapists, who, of course, should be punished, but also that any woman can declare that this is the kind of man twenty, thirty, fifty years ago touched her knee or slapped her on the ass - and all, a man's life collapses in front of his eyes without any opportunity to justify because she is the same - and #MeToo? That's right, fuck off the mountain and the bloody harasser, #TimesUp he was breathing.

Allen, of course, somehow floundered and resisted, but against such a rink can not be fooled: the film put on the shelf and in the U.S. it seems, will never come out. (And none of the state streaming services have it.) In addition, some actors engaged in the film did not fail to angrily condemn the director for the fact that Dylan suddenly cut through the memory. The checks didn't show anything, Allen is not accused of anything, but why should that prevent the once-beloved director from trampling, right?

22-year-old actor Timothy Chalamet, who seems to be looking for a brilliant career, did not take risks in this career and made a strong statement on his Instagram that he intends to stand shoulder to shoulder with those who #MeToo for all the good against #ВсеМужикиСво for all the bad, so his fee for this film he will list ... No, it's no longer fashionable for the starving children of Africa to help, so Timothy will help Time's Up, the LGBT Center of New York and RAINN.

And a couple of actors much smaller from this film also jumped on this train, vociferously refused their fees and also transferred them somewhere in THE LGBT, or in RAINN, but, between us, it does not hurt- these organizations and enriched: in the paintings of Allen, as you know, the actors get a penny, he has films always low-budget. It's just an honor for a lot of people to star at Allen's. However, it is clear that now this honor will be considered extremely doubtful - just to not get under the rink, it is a matter of purely personal safety.

Against the background of all this majestic madhouse, only Jude Law noticed that some aunts had already specifically gone with this #MeToo, but who would listen to him at all? Everyone knows that he is only a saint of himself...

However, enough is enough about the unfortunate fate of this film, although there is something very symbolic in the fact that the picture of one of the main admirers of New York in New York itself will not show. But the film came out in other countries, including the UK, I watched it, so let's talk about it, especially since it's most likely a swan song by Woody Allen, for which now there is only one possibility to make a movie: to involve non-American actors who do not expect to ever breakthrough in Hollywood.

So what's wrong with the swan song? The swan song turned out to be very simple, and defiantly simple, as if Allen was really making a movie for romantically minded high-class girls. However, this impression is deceptive. No, that is, high school students, I think, should like the film, but at the same time it is of interest to the age of the audience, who know the work of this director well.

Because this film is double-bottomed. It seems to tell about the life of modern, to disgust affluent youth, but as most of Woody Allen's films - about him, and this film - also about him. Obviously, Gatsby - this is Woody Allen and is, what directly indicates the tweed jacket from the last century (who now of the youth in their right mind will wear a tweed jacket?), and most importantly - in the mouth of Gatsby easily guess Allen ironic phrases and remarks. This is no longer Woody's former bacchanalia, as in Jade Scorpion, but nevertheless a certain part of his trademark irony is present, and it is quite recognizable.

By the way, in addition to the young Woody in the person of Timothy Chalame there is another young Woody - a former classmate Gatsby, who shoots his thesis film (during this shooting Gatsby, in fact, and meets with Chen). So, the director - a short Jew-intellectual in old-fashioned glasses - is also another alter ego Allen.

In the film, it seems that the action takes place with young people in modern New York, but in fact, Allen shows rather New York of his youth: not for nothing the main character bears the name Gatsby, which as a name does not exist - it is the surname of the main character of the novel Scott Fitzgerald "The Great Gatsby", and in the monologues gatsby there is quite a lot of Holden Caulfield from "The gap in the rye" Sallinger.

And in this picture a lot with a double bottom: on the one hand, Allen seems to openly mock the self-digging and self-directed director Roland Pollard, and on the other, whom he in this image shows something, as again not himself?!!

Timothy Chalame as Gatsby is not bad, but nothing special. Perhaps this character would have looked much better if he were more like Woody himself - in this case, irony and rebelliousness would look more credible. And Shalame, with his thin facial features, is, I think, a very different type. But maybe Allen really thinks he was like that when he was young.

Well, basically yes, one person.

El Fanning plays "the charm of a fool" © and, in general, portrays her quite successfully. Indeed, the charm of what a fool, and her incredible adventures in the world of bohemian cinema are quite funny, as well as all those characters that come across in her way: the director is a great performance of Leo Schreiber, the screenwriter, who was great Jude law, and the movie star Francisco Vega, in the role of which fun fooled Diego Luna.

Selena Gomez as Chen - well, not bad, but nothing particularly memorable. Well, well at least not a doll beauty with a constantly half-open mouth, for that already thank you.

However, in this film actors - not the main thing, oddly enough. In this film, the main thing - New York and the way it is shot by the cameraman Vittorio Storaro - legendary, I note the operator who shot "Apocalypse Now", "The Last Emperor", "Twentieth Century" and many other famous pictures.

And here very plays the way it is shown: here, it would seem, what can be found in rainy New York? But then it's all shot so that even I wanted in one tweed jacket to go outside in the rain, and where I'm here in Spain I'll take a tweed jacket, not to mention the rain?!!

I liked it. The film is completely optional to watch, but it is very tuned and leaves a good aftertaste. Cinematic bohemian - very funny, Allen's signature humor, though in homeopathic doses, but present, a couple of hooligan twists, rainy New York and old bars with a piano in the bushes, which Gatsby recklessly calls the piano, are in their fighting posts, so I need to drink and listen to the song Irving Berlin. It's a quote from the movie.
